Salary:
Starting pay is $35,707 per year plus excellent benefits and advancement opportunities. May receive supplemental (add-on) pay adjustments for additional credits relevant to the position that are over and above the credits needed for certification. A six-month probationary period is required. This position is in pay schedule and range 13-05.

HIRING ORGANIZATION: The Department of Corrections (DOC) is accepting applications for Teacher-Basic Skills Level 1 positions located at adult correctional institutions and community correctional centers statewide. Adult correctional institutions include: Green Bay (Area 05), Stanley (Area 09), Columbia (Area 11), Prairie du Chien (Area 12), Oakhill (Area 13), Waupun and Fox Lake (Area 14), Taycheedah (Area 20), Wisconsin Secure Program Facility (Area 22), Jackson (Area 27), New Lisbon (Area 29), Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility (Area 41), Racine & Racine Youthful Offender (Area 52), Kettle Moraine (Area 60), Redgranite (Area 70), and Oshkosh (Area 71). Community Correctional Centers include: John Burke (Area 14), Gordon (Area 16), Black River Falls (Area 27), Robert E. Ellsworth (Area 52), St. Croix (Area 56), and Flambeau (Area 58).


Our current vacancy (as of 02/14/2006) is located at the Racine Youthful Offender Correctional Facility. Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution located in Plymouth (Sheboygan County) anticipates a vacancy in the next 6 months.

Job Duties:   

Develop and implement a program of professional basic education instructional services to inmates in order to meet their individual academic needs, from basic literacy through GED preparation. Use your teaching skills within a classroom and/or tutorial environment to provide instruction to motivated students. Work with team members to plan programs, develop policies, and provide special activities in areas outside the traditional role.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Basic Skills Level 1 (Certification #850)


1) Bachelor’s degree in elementary education or 2) Bachelor's degree in special education or 3) Bachelor’s degree in any area as long as you have 20 credits in a single academic area and a total of 6 semester credits of teaching methods, including Reading methods. All candidates must have one year (2,000 hours) work experience outside the field of education. This position has Wisconsin Technical College System requirements. Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

Curriculum and instructional methods appropriate to students with basic educational and behavioral needs; multi-cultural teaching strategies; modern teaching methods and techniques; and effective oral and written communication skills.
