Pay rate for the selected applicant will be between $44,641 and $62,640 annually commensurate with qualifications. This classification is nonrepresented. Pay schedule/range 81-03. A 12-month probationary period is required.

Some travel within the State of Wisconsin. Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid driver's license, or the ability to provide one's own transportation for work assignments is required.

Join an exciting team of professionals supporting the growth and quality of Wisconsin's agriculture industry.  The focus for this position will be in business development of local and regional food systems.

We are located in the Prairie Oak State Office Building situated on Madison’s southeast side and nestled in a beautifully wooded and scenic hilltop venue. Our employees enjoy ample, low-cost parking at the facility. We are only minutes away from the Beltline Highway, Interstate 90 and Highway 51 for quick access to local restaurants, retail and service locations.

Job Duties:   This position functions as an Economic Development Consultant with statewide responsibilities related to increasing the state’s market share of locally grown and produced agricultural products.  This position maintains an emphasis in local and regional food system development, including working with producers and industry groups to develop, expand and enhance marketing, distribution and processing networks between consumers, food producers, distributors, retailers and public institutions.  The position must be able to analyze local food systems, utilize economic modeling practices, and develop marketing strategies to aide in the direction, planning, implementation, training and evaluation of Market Wisconsin programs (e.g., Something Special from Wisconsin™, SavorWisconsin.com and Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin, etc.).  This position develops and maintains effective networks with businesses, state agencies, industry associations, universities and organizations to foster new investment relationships.


Duties for this position include developing and implementing economic programs including analyzing legislative mandates and market trends; researching and identifying training or educational needs of Wisconsin agricultural businesses; and recommending policy or operating procedures.  This includes providing technical consultation to producers and industry associations on marketing, business planning, fund sourcing, production and distribution.  The position also works to create business networks to stimulate interest in buying and selling locally grown or produced products.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   Considerable knowledge of regional food system development and practice (such as grocery management, product management, food purchasing and distribution);considerable knowledge of project and meeting management practices and techniques; Considerable skill leading teams as well as in bringing organizations together, building consensus for cooperative action and coordinating implementation; Considerable knowledge of the agricultural industry; Extensive knowledge of agricultural related business development practices, programs and policies; Strong, effective oral and written communication skills; this includes facilitation and negotiation skills; Ability to develop relationships and networks with industry, government officials, and other state agency staff; Knowledge of business and community economic development strategies including the ability to identify target markets, develop market entry strategies and identify investment opportunities in the state; ability to analyze economic, investment and business factors; Knowledge of research techniques, data collection and effective data analysis; Knowledge of program development and evaluation.

2. Utilizing work examples describe your experience consulting and /or training of individuals and/or groups. Be sure to include the business topics you consulted/trained on and your specific role.

3. Utilizing professional work examples identify and describe all the activities (e.g. budgeting, goal setting, schedule coordination, training, collaboration, etc.) you have performed while in a project management role.

Be sure to address each number/skill area separately, labeling each one in your typewritten paper.
