Annual starting salary for this position will be between $32,197 and $41,909 depending on training and experience and includes a comprehensive state benefits package. This broadbanded postion is in schedule and range 81-04.

The Department of Corrections, Bureau of Correctional Enterprises has an opening for an Industries Supervisor in the Aluminum Recycling Program located at the New Lisbon Correctional Institution (NLCI), Juneau County (Code 29).  The incumbent in this position is responsible for the supervision and management of the Aluminum Sign and Wood Sign Post Recycling Shop.  NLCI is a medium security, adult male institution.

Job Duties:   

  • direct supervision of non-skilled and semi-skilled inmate employees providing training in the metal fabrication field

  • direct supervision of classified state civil service staff including monitoring and evaluating performance, participating in interviews and hiring, hearing grievances, recommending discipline, approving vacation and sick leave, etc.

  • direct the interviewing and selection of inmate staff and monitor work activities and performance and ensure Industries Specialists are monitoring inmate employee work activities for conformance with institution rules and procedures

  • direct supervision of the product operations with respect to volume, schedules and delivery dates, cost, and quality products

  • establish shift schedules and staffing patterns

  • monitor monthly budgets and maintain expenditures

  • recommend and develop new techniques for production using feedback, technical literature, seminars, training, etc.

  • perform duties of Industries Specialists when necessary

  • establish pricing for bidding, projections and loss as it relates to sale of product

  • maintain operating standards of quality by spot checking work in process and finished goods, ensuring regular inspections of equipment, and discussing safety and health objectives with employees

  • management of production and inventory systems, utilizing MRP computer system

  • management of production process and cost controls

  • under the direction of the Superintendent manage, design, and develop new products

  • oversee the development of engineering drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing process route sheets

  • provide inmates with information and direction regarding the Institution/Farm based components of the Transition Program

  • participate in Bureau's annual inventory process

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   


  • materials, methods and practices used in the manufacturing of metal and wood products

  • set-up, operation, maintenance, and repair of equipment used in a metal and/or wood fabrication shop

  • learn specifications and maintenance of the Hydro-stripper

  • assembly techniques of metal and wood components for products

  • design and engineering techniques of metals and metal and wood products

  •  production and quality control techniques

  • metal and wood fabrication equipment

  • basic computer skills and knowledge of or ability to learn MRP, or Proteus computer system

  • techniques for effective written and oral communications

  • supervisory and training techniques

  • problem solving techniques, employee relations and employee evaluation process

  • occupational hazards and safety precautions of a metal and wood fabrication operation

  • hazardous waste handling and communications

  • affirmative action fundamentals and procedure
